Western Region champions Mwitoti Girls School made a thunderous statement at the ongoing Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Championships after overpowering Kwathanze Girls 3-1 in an electrifying opening volleyball encounter at the M-PESA Foundation Academy in Thika.
The Mumias-based volleyball giants displayed class, composure and determination as they outplayed their opponents in a contest that reaffirmed their status as genuine title contenders. From the opening whistle, Mwitoti dictated the pace of the match with powerful attacks, disciplined defending and brilliant teamwork to register an impressive four-set victory.
The win handed the Western Region representatives a perfect start to their national campaign and injected fresh confidence into the squad as they pursue the coveted national volleyball crown.
Led by Principal Samuel Ogola the school has continued to build a formidable volleyball programme that has earned admiration across the country. Their qualification for the national championships came after an outstanding campaign in the Western Region games, where they demonstrated consistency and resilience.
The atmosphere at the M-PESA Foundation Academy was electric as a sea of enthusiastic supporters, many dressed in the school’s colours, cheered every point won by the team. Their songs and chants transformed the venue into a home ground for Mwitoti Girls.
Among those who played a significant role in lifting the team’s morale was renowned philanthropist Hamisi Waswa, the Patron of Bunge FC and a passionate supporter of Mwitoti Girls Secondary School.
Waswa facilitated the travel of more than 100 fans to Thika, enabling them to rally behind the team throughout the championship. Their unwavering support proved instrumental as the players responded with an inspiring performance on the court.
Speaking after the victory, members of the technical bench expressed satisfaction with the team’s display but emphasized that the mission is far from over.
“We are happy to begin the tournament with a win. The girls executed our game plan well, but we remain focused because every match at this stage is like a final,” one of the officials said.
The convincing triumph has now placed Mwitoti Girls in a strong position as they prepare for their remaining group fixtures, with hopes of progressing to the knockout stages and eventually challenging for national honours.
Back home in Mumias and across Western Kenya, excitement continues to grow as parents, alumni, education stakeholders and sports lovers celebrate the team’s impressive start, expressing confidence that the girls have what it takes to bring the national trophy to the region.
