Thousands of residents in Mumias East Sub-County are set to benefit from improved access to quality healthcare following the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the long-awaited Shianda Level 4 Hospital.
The landmark project officially marks the transformation of Shianda Health Centre into a modern 100-bed Level 4 healthcare facility, a move expected to significantly enhance the delivery of specialized medical services while reducing the burden on patients who currently travel long distances in search of treatment.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the county, describing the project as a major milestone in ensuring equitable access to quality and affordable healthcare.
The governor noted that the new hospital, which is scheduled for completion within 24 months, will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, maternity care, emergency treatment, laboratory services, surgical care, and other specialized medical services to residents of Mumias East and neighbouring sub-counties.
He emphasized that the project forms part of the county government’s broader agenda to transform the healthcare sector through the construction and upgrading of modern health facilities.
Governor Barasa highlighted the progress already achieved under his administration, noting that Butere County Hospital is now fully operational, Shamakhubu Level 4 Hospital is nearing completion, while the county government, in collaboration with the National Government, is on course to complete the Kakamega Level 6 Teaching and Referral Hospital before the end of the year.
Health stakeholders and local residents welcomed the project, expressing optimism that the new facility will improve access to specialized healthcare services, reduce referrals to distant hospitals, create employment opportunities, and enhance emergency medical response within the region.
Once completed, Shianda Level 4 Hospital is expected to become one of the key referral facilities in Kakamega County, serving thousands of patients from Mumias East and neighbouring communities while reinforcing the county’s commitment to achieving universal healthcare coverage.
The groundbreaking ceremony attracted county officials, healthcare professionals, local leaders, and hundreds of residents who hailed the project as a historic investment that will transform healthcare delivery and improve the quality of life for generations to come.
