Goibei Girls High School from Vihiga County emerged as a standout performer at the 97th Kenya Music Festival, held at Meru, Kaaga Girls High School.
The talented students secured first place in every folk music category they participated in, captivating both the audience and adjudicators with their exceptional performances.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage
The school’s repertoire featured vibrant Pokot, Marakwet, and Turkana traditional songs, each delivered with passion and authenticity.

Their performances not only entertained but also showcased the rich cultural heritage of Kenya’s diverse communities.
Recognition and Presidential Invitation
In recognition of their excellence, the students earned an invitation to perform at a state gala hosted by the head of state, an honour they eagerly anticipate.
A Legacy of Excellence Under Strong Leadership
Goibei Girls High School has long been renowned for its excellence in folk music, a tradition upheld under the leadership of Chief Principal and Music Patron, Dr. Rose Koech.

A distinguished administrator and advocate for academic and artistic excellence, Dr. Koech has been instrumental in reviving performing arts in schools, consistently motivating her students to aim for greatness.
Authenticity That Stunned Adjudicators
The students’ performances were so authentic that the adjudication panel struggled to distinguish them from actual Pokot performers.
Their stunning costumes, high energy, articulate diction, intricate choreography, and deep cultural connection made their presentation a festival highlight.

Students Credit Their Success to Guidance and Training
In an interview, the students expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Koech for her unwavering support.
“Our Chief Principal has been the driving force behind our success, from zonal competitions to this national stage,” they said. “She connected us with an exceptional trainer who understood the cultural nuances of the communities we represented, which greatly enhanced our performance.”
Many members of the music troupe hail from Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet regions, further enriching their cultural interpretations.

“We know our heritage intimately, and this connection allows us to deliver performances that truly resonate,” they added.
“Dr. Koech has been our pillar, providing everything we needed. We couldn’t disappoint her, so we gave our best. Now, we’re preparing to perform before the head of state—a rare and cherished opportunity. We are truly grateful to God for this milestone.”
As they prepare for their presidential gala performance, Goibei Girls High School continues to shine as a beacon of cultural pride and artistic excellence.
