St. Mary’s School Yala are the new 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Nyanza Region Boys’ Football Champions after defeating Kisumu Boys High School 1-0 in a thrilling and fiercely contested final that showcased the very best of school football.

The championship clash attracted hundreds of fans, teachers, alumni and football enthusiasts, all eager to witness two of Nyanza’s football giants battle for regional supremacy. The encounter lived up to expectations, with both sides creating scoring opportunities in an intense contest characterized by tactical discipline, relentless pressing and outstanding individual performances.
After an evenly balanced opening period, St. Mary’s Yala returned from the break with renewed determination. Their persistence was eventually rewarded with the all-important goal that sent their supporters into wild celebrations. Despite sustained pressure from Kisumu Boys in the closing stages, the Black Saints defended courageously, preserving their slender advantage until the final whistle.

The victory capped a remarkable regional campaign for St. Mary’s Yala, who remained composed throughout the tournament and demonstrated the qualities of true champions. The triumph earns St. Mary’s Yala automatic qualification to the 2026 KSSSA National Games, where they will proudly represent the Nyanza Region against the country’s best secondary school football teams in pursuit of national honours.
Speaking after the historic victory, Chief Principal Mr. Victor Makanda congratulated the players, technical bench and the entire school fraternity for the remarkable achievement.
“This victory is a testament to the discipline, commitment and resilience that define St. Mary’s Yala. Our boys have worked tirelessly throughout the season, and today they have shown that determination, teamwork and faith can overcome every challenge. We are immensely proud of this team for bringing the regional trophy home.”

Mr. Makanda added that the achievement reflects the school’s holistic approach to education, where academic excellence goes hand in hand with sporting success.
