TOP GIRL is a leading Community Based Organization ( CBO) in Mumias dedicated to providing holistic support to girls by nurturing their academic, emotional and social development.

The organization offers scholarships, provision of upkeep, mentorship life skills training, career guidance and individualised support  to empower girls so that they can thrive in school and pursue their future aspirations.

Over the years, the girl child  from rural and disadvantaged families have faced numerous challenges, including early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and female genital mutilation (FGM) in some communities. These challenges have necessitated the rise of organizations like TOP GIRL that are committed to empowering girls and safeguarding their future.

Today, TOP GIRL stands out as one of the premier organizations advocating for girl-child empowerment, thanks to the strong leadership and strategic direction of its directors.

Currently, the organization has 25 girls in high schools, 11 girls who will be joining colleges and universities in September, 35 have so far graduated, 89 supported by the program and over 1245 learners mentored in various Primary schools.

Speaking in Mumias during a session that brought together beneficiaries,Parents and students in the program, the Program Officer, Ms. Inviolata Akoth, affirmed the organization’s commitment:

“We have bright and promising girls who are worth our support, and we will continue standing with them until they complete their academic journey.”

Beyond scholarships, the organization runs a robust mentorship program aimed at helping girls understand their self-worth and life potential. Through mentorship, beneficiaries are connected to role models who guide and support them in navigating life challenges.

In addition, TOP GIRL implements community support initiatives targeting parents and guardians, enabling them to better support the girls, especially during school breaks.

According to Ms. Akoth, the impact of the program is already being felt:

“Many families are going to be transformed in the near future as some of our pioneer beneficiaries are completing their studies and are ready to give back to society.”

Several beneficiaries and guardians expressed heartfelt appreciation to TOP GIRL for transforming their lives.

Rev. Peter Kweyu a guardian to one of the beneficiaries, shared how the organization restored hope.
The organization fully catered for the student’s fees at St. Brigid’s Kitale, leaving him to only handle minimal transport costs. The student went on to score an impressive B+ grade and is set to join university in September.

Shirley Kadenge, a former beneficiary supported from high school through university, is now undertaking her internship at Mbale Hospital after successfully completing her undergraduate studies at Uzima University where she studied Clinical Medicine.

“The organization has truly moved mountains in my life. I encourage them to continue mentoring more girls,” she said.

Mrs. Carolyne Obagi, a parent to Vanessa Akinyi, also praised the organization.
Vanessa emerged the top student in Yala Sub-County and received admission to Moi Girls Nairobi. However, financial constraints nearly derailed her dreams until she was referred to TOP GIRL.

“We never expected a miracle, but within 48 hours, we received a cheque for school fees.Today, Vanessa is thriving. May God continue to bless this organization,” she said.

Scarlet Nyakoha a student at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, is currently pursuing a degree in Microbiology and Microstatistics thanks to the program.

“TOP GIRL has completely changed how I view my future. Coming from a vulnerable background, I never imagined I would reach university, but today I am here because of their support,” she shared.

Challenges Facing the Organization

Despite its tremendous impact, TOP GIRL continues to face significant challenges that affect service delivery.

According to Ms. Akoth, financial constraints remain the biggest hurdle.
“We initially focused on academics, but when we visit homes, we encounter deeper challenges such as mental health and other family issues that require additional resources,” she explained.

Lack of skills and exposure, Weak support systems, gender norms and cultural barriers, economic constraints and limited access to education are also among the challenges that dearly affect us.
