Matungu Youth Forum Mourns Teacher and Sports Enthusiast Frankline Otsieno “Drogba”

Matungu Youth Forum (MYF), a popular non-political community forum in Kakamega County, on Tuesday joined family, friends, and residents in laying to rest Mr Frankline Otsieno, popularly known as “Drogba,” at his home in Munami Village, Namamali Ward, Matungu Sub-county.

The late Drogba, a devoted teacher and passionate sports enthusiast, died in a road accident on December 21, 2025, while on his way home. His death shocked the local community, where he was widely respected for his commitment to education, youth empowerment, and sports development.

Eulogising him on behalf of the forum, MYF Patron Mr Ismael Mumia described Drogba as a dependable pillar of the group and a unifying force among members.

“He brought life to the forum, supported all our initiatives, and never missed group plans. His loss has left us deeply saddened, especially because he has left us at such a young age,” Mr Mumia said.

As a non-political forum, MYF supports members during times of need, including funerals, school fees assistance, and empowerment initiatives. In line with this mandate, the forum mobilised resources to support Drogba’s family and help them cope with the loss.

The forum, which draws membership from various leaders across Kakamega County, has earned praise for its effectiveness, transparency, and strong organisational structures. Funds raised by the group are publicly accounted for, a practice that has built trust and confidence among members and the wider community.

MYF Organising Secretary Mr Sammy Silas Makokha described the late Drogba as not only a close friend but also a sharp and reliable individual.

“Many times we would meet in social joints to watch football. He was truly passionate about sports and dependable in everything he did,” Mr Makokha said.

Thousands of mourners turned up to witness the final send-off of the late Drogba, remembering him as a devoted teacher, friend, MYF member, husband, and father. At just 40 years of age, he had already made a name for himself in several spheres of community life.

Mourners noted that the void left by his death will be difficult to fill, citing his proactive nature, firm principles, and courage to take a stand, qualities that endeared him to many, including political leaders.

The late Otsieno taught at Eshikhondi Comprehensive School for over a decade before being transferred to Bulanda C.E.B. School in Namamali Ward, where he continued to serve diligently.

Mr Mumia further revealed that MYF plans to expand its activities and impact in the region, with new measures expected to be unveiled during the forum’s upcoming Annual General Meeting.

As the community bade farewell, members of Matungu Youth Forum paid tribute to their fallen colleague, wishing him eternal rest and peace.
