Politics in Matayos Constituency has taken a decisive turn following the entry of Hon. Hamphreys Nakitare into the race ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Dr Nakitare, popularly known as “Naks”, is already generating significant debate across the five wards of Matayos South, Matayos West, Busibwabo, Burumba and Mayenje. Observers describe his candidature as a major development that could reshape the political landscape.
A seasoned administrator, Nakitare has in recent years rolled out empowerment programmes targeting youth and women across the constituency. Through sustained grassroots engagement, including visits to churches, youth groups and women’s organisations, he has steadily built his visibility and support base.

Political analysts say his growing influence is likely to unsettle established players, particularly the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. Geoffrey Odanga, who is serving his third term after first being elected in 2013.
According to commentators based in Busia Town, Nakitare enters the race with notable strategic advantages. They cite his financial stability, which could enable him to mount a structured and visible campaign across the constituency. His strong appeal among young people and women is also viewed as a significant asset, especially in a constituency where youth form a substantial share of the electorate.
“Naks has been on the ground consistently. He is not just appearing because elections are near. People have seen his work,” said a political observer in Busia.

Born and raised in Matayos, Nakitare is said to enjoy a close connection with residents. Supporters describe him as humble and accessible, noting that despite his administrative background, he prefers direct engagement with wananchi over high-profile political theatrics.
Infrastructure and unemployment are emerging as key issues shaping early campaign discourse. During recent public engagements, Nakitare criticised the condition of roads in the constituency, arguing that poor infrastructure continues to constrain economic growth and service delivery.
“Roads in our constituency are too poor. We have voted overwhelmingly since 2013, yet there is little to show for it. We need to fix Matayos for the better,” he said.
If elected, he has pledged to prioritise road rehabilitation, expand electricity connectivity, strengthen support for education and scale up empowerment programmes for youth, women and persons living with disabilities. He has also committed to investing in youth employment initiatives and enhancing security across the constituency.
With nearly two years to the 2027 polls, the political atmosphere in Matayos is already gathering momentum. While the incumbent remains an experienced political figure, Nakitare’s early traction signals a competitive race ahead.
As campaigns gradually intensify, residents of Matayos will be watching closely as what could become one of Busia County’s most closely contested parliamentary battles begins to take shape.
