Busia County emerged the overall champions of the 2026 Western Region Secondary Schools Special Needs Education (SNE) Ball Games after a spirited three-day championship held at St. Angela Mumias School for the Deaf Girls.
The championship brought together talented learners with special needs from Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga and Bungoma counties, who displayed exceptional skill, determination and resilience in badminton, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, netball and soccer.
Busia stamped its authority throughout the competition, clinching the overall title after dominating several disciplines, including boys’ basketball, boys’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, girls’ volleyball and girls’ netball.
Kakamega County finished second overall after impressive performances in badminton and table tennis, where the county swept both boys’ and girls’ titles, besides winning the girls’ basketball championship.
Vihiga secured third place overall, while Bungoma finished fourth after putting up determined performances across the various disciplines.
In the girls’ overall standings, Busia topped the rankings, followed by Kakamega, Vihiga and Bungoma. The boys’ category also saw Busia finish first, with Kakamega taking second place, Vihiga third and Bungoma fourth.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Western Region Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Special Needs Education Chairman Mr. Walter Kwanusu commended the learners for their discipline, sportsmanship and determination throughout the championship.
“These games have demonstrated that learners with special needs possess immense talent that deserves recognition and support. The level of competition has been impressive, and I congratulate all participating counties for making the event a success. We now expect the selected regional composite teams to carry the Western Region flag with pride at the national championships,” said Mr. Kwanusu.
He also applauded coaches, teachers, officials and school administrators for nurturing talent among learners with disabilities, noting that sports continue to play a critical role in promoting inclusion, confidence and holistic development.
Following the conclusion of the regional championship, a Western Region composite team has been selected from the outstanding performers across all participating counties. The team will travel to Thika to represent the region during the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Special Needs Education Ball Games finals.
The national championships are expected to bring together the country’s finest SNE athletes, with the Western Region hopeful of maintaining its strong tradition of excellence on the national stage.
