The race for the Matayos National Assembly seat in 2027 has taken a dramatic turn following the entry of Humphreys Okuku Nakitare, the current Director of Corporate Services at the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).
His declaration sets the stage for a high-stakes political battle in Busia County, with the future of incumbent MP Geoffrey Odanga—also the ODM Chairperson—now in question.
A New Contender Emerges
Nakitare, a seasoned administrator with extensive experience in governance, formally announced his bid, vowing to bring an “issue-based and work-driven” leadership style to Matayos Constituency.
His entry complicates Odanga’s political landscape. He is serving his third term but faces criticism over alleged poor service delivery.
“I have what it takes to change things in Matayos from 2027 and beyond,” Nakitare declared. “Beyond bursaries, roads, and education, I will prioritise the needs of my people, initiate a transformative agenda, and create international job connections for our youths while empowering women and young people through income-generating activities.”
A Track Record of Public Service
Nakitare boasts an impressive résumé, having served as a District Commissioner, County Commissioner, and County Secretary in Kisumu before his current role at NGAAF.
His grassroots engagement has already earned him support, with many citing his past contributions—including securing jobs for youth in the police force and disbursing grants to women’s groups across Matayos’ wards: Busibwabo, Matayos South, Burumba and Mayenje.
Mixed Reactions from the Electorate
While Nakitare’s bid has energised a section of voters, others remain cautious. Moses Ouma, a local resident, expressed optimism but recalled past disappointments:
“We hoped Nakitare would run in 2017 and even considered him the best candidate to challenge former Governor Sospeter Ojaamong in 2022, but he hesitated. Now that he’s finally stepping up, we are ready to support him. Matayos needs a visionary leader, and his track record speaks for itself.”
Incumbent Under Pressure
Hon. Odanga, a three-term MP, now faces growing discontent among constituents who accuse him of underperformance.
Analysts suggest that Nakitare’s administrative experience and grassroots mobilization could pose a significant threat to Odanga’s bid for re-election.
Strategic Preparations Underway
In anticipation of a fierce contest, Nakitare has been holding strategic meetings with stakeholders across the constituency to consolidate support.
Political pundits argue that his technocratic background and development-focused agenda position him as a formidable candidate.
What’s Next?
As the 2027 elections draw closer, all eyes will be on Matayos to see whether Nakitare’s promise of transformative leadership will resonate more than Odanga’s political longevity.
One thing is certain: the battle for Matayos will be one of Busia’s most closely watched political showdowns.
