Traders in Butere Sub-County are set to benefit from improved business opportunities as the construction of the Shiatsala Ultra-Modern Market nears completion, with works now more than 80 per cent complete.

The market, being developed by the County Government of Kakamega under the leadership of Governor FCPA Dr. Fernandes Barasa, is expected to accommodate over 160 traders and provide a modern, safe and conducive environment for business.

The project breathes new life into a development that had stalled under the previous county administration, with the current government fast-tracking its completion as part of efforts to enhance trade and stimulate local economic growth.

Once completed, the facility will boast modern amenities, including an ablution block, a restaurant and a fully equipped kitchen, making it one of the most modern trading centres in the region.

The new market is expected to relocate traders currently operating along roadsides into a secure and organized trading space, improving sanitation, reducing congestion and enhancing the overall shopping experience for customers.
Speaking on the project’s progress, county officials noted that the market is a key component of Governor Barasa’s development agenda aimed at modernizing trading infrastructure and empowering small-scale entrepreneurs across Kakamega County.

The officials said the county government remains committed to creating an enabling business environment by investing in modern markets that support enterprise growth, increase household incomes and create employment opportunities.

Residents and traders have welcomed the rapid progress of the project, expressing optimism that the market will become a vibrant commercial hub that will spur economic activities in Shiatsala and the surrounding areas.
