The spirit of democracy came alive at St. Joseph’s Girls Senior School (JOGA), Kitale as students peacefully and enthusiastically participated in the election of a new Student Governing Council in an exercise that underscored the school’s commitment to nurturing principled, responsible, and visionary leaders.

The election, conducted in a transparent, free, and well-organized manner, saw students cast their votes after an energetic campaign period marked by issue-based manifestos, healthy competition, and exemplary discipline. Throughout the process, candidates and voters alike demonstrated maturity, respect for democratic values, and a deep appreciation of the responsibility that comes with leadership.

Far from being an ordinary school election, the exercise served as a practical civic education lesson, exposing learners to the principles of democracy, accountability, integrity, and informed decision-making. Students were encouraged to elect leaders based not on popularity, but on character, vision, competence, and a genuine desire to serve.

Speaking after the successful exercise, Chief Principal Mrs. Rosebella Orwaru lauded the students for conducting themselves with dignity and responsibility, noting that such opportunities prepare young people for leadership roles beyond the school environment.

“At St. Joseph’s Girls Senior School, we believe leadership is learned through experience. By allowing our students to participate in a credible democratic process, we are equipping them with lifelong values of responsibility, accountability, integrity, and service. We encourage our learners to make wise decisions by choosing leaders based on their vision, character, and ability to serve others rather than personal interests,” said Mrs. Orwaru.

She added that the school remains committed to producing not only academic excellence but also morally upright and transformational leaders capable of making meaningful contributions to society.

Mrs. Orwaru further observed that exposing learners to democratic processes at an early age cultivates critical thinking, confidence, tolerance for differing opinions, and respect for the rule of law—qualities that are essential in building a progressive nation.

Teachers present during the exercise praised the orderly conduct of the elections, describing them as a reflection of the school’s strong culture of discipline and values-based education.

As the newly elected Student Governing Council prepares to assume office, the school’s administration expressed confidence that the leaders will uphold the trust bestowed upon them and champion the welfare of their fellow students with dedication, humility, and integrity.

The successful elections once again reaffirm JOGA’s reputation as a centre of excellence committed to shaping not only brilliant scholars but also ethical leaders prepared to make wise decisions and positively impact their communities and the nation at large.
