A Day of Celebration and Inspiration
Kibuk Girls, the leading girls’ school in Mt. Elgon, hosted its Annual General Meeting and Prize-Giving Day in a vibrant event attended by key education stakeholders.
The occasion was graced by Ms. Miriam Koskei, ambassador of the KAPKUGO festivals and daughter of Hon. Felix Koskei, Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service.
Words of Wisdom from the Chief Guest
Ms. Koskei expressed her gratitude for the invitation and praised the students’ diverse talents:
“I’m honoured to be here at Kibuk Girls. I’m impressed by the confidence and creativity of these young women and urge them to channel that energy into their academics.”

She emphasised the importance of education as a tool for empowerment:
“Education is the greatest equaliser. Identify a mentor who inspires you and hold on to her. Among you are future engineers, lawyers, doctors, and anything is possible if you remain focused.”
Ms. Koskei also addressed the rising concern of early pregnancies in Mt. Elgon:
“Be selfish about your books and open your minds. Early pregnancies will deter your future; don’t limit yourselves.”

She encouraged parents to support teachers and speak positively to their daughters, promising to sponsor a trip to Mombasa for the 2025 candidate class if they excel in exams. She also donated sanitary towels to support girls in school.
Stakeholders Applaud School Progress
Mr. Machacha Wijembe
Mt. Elgon Sub-County Director of Education
Mr. Wijembe thanked attendees and praised the school’s progress:
“Kibuk Girls is dear to my heart. I’m impressed by the girls’ self-esteem and the school’s stability under new leadership.”

He urged parents to guide and support their daughters and speak positively about teachers to foster academic success.
Mrs. Grace Shikote
TSC Director, Mt. Elgon
Mrs. Shikote commended the Principal for rapid development:
“We’re impressed by the progress in just four months. A modern gate is underway, and solarisation is taking shape.”
She promised to address staffing needs and encouraged students to focus on doing the right things at the right time.
Mr. Stephen Chemonges
KNUT Secretary, Mt. Elgon Branch
Mr. Chemonges praised the Principal’s leadership and called for infrastructure improvements:
“Kibuk is a large school and needs expansion. The government’s decision to slash capitation could derail the education agenda.”

He urged the national government to prioritise education funding.
The Principal’s Vision for Excellence
Mrs. Josephine Chebonya, the school’s Senior Principal, thanked stakeholders for their support and shared her vision:
“Kibuk Girls has 520 students and 34 teachers, including six employed by the BOM. Our 2025 candidate class, ‘The Snipers,’ is well-prepared for exams.”

With a target mean score of 6.6, the school has implemented strategies to improve performance, especially in sciences and mathematics.
Infrastructure Challenges and Plans
The school faces several challenges:
- Poor pathways during rainy seasons
- Inadequate toilet facilities and ageing structures
Mrs. Chebonya has proposed installing cabros from the entrance and is seeking stakeholder support. A modern gate is already under construction.
“The interests of our learners are my top priority. I’ll do everything possible to make Kibuk Girls a pinnacle of academic excellence.”
Celebrating Student Achievements
Twenty students from the 2025 class were awarded suitcases for outstanding performance. All candidates who scored C+ and above were recognised.
Mrs. Chebonya promised a laptop to every student who scores C+ and above in the upcoming exams.

Student Leadership Speaks
School Captain Miss Adelyn Maurura assured parents of the class’s readiness:
“We’re prepared to make history. The 2025 class will register the highest number of university admissions in Kibuk Girls’ history.”
She highlighted achievements in solarisation, discipline, and student welfare under the current administration.
