Matungu Youth Forum (MYF), a leading and popular non-political youth group in Matungu Sub-county, Western Kenya, on Tuesday held its Annual General Meeting in a colourful ceremony attended by hundreds of members at the Nabongo Cultural Centre in Eshiembekho.
The well-attended event was presided over by the group’s patron, Mr Ismael Mumia, and the chairperson, Praxides Shiranda, alongside other distinguished leaders.
Popularly known as MYF, the group has in recent months remained in the public spotlight due to its structured grassroots engagements and impactful community activities, earning widespread admiration from residents.
Founded in 2015 by a small group of youths under the banner Team Change, MYF was formed by young people who felt that the leadership at the time was not adequately addressing youth needs. Over the years, the forum has steadily grown into a formidable and respected youth movement in the region.

During the AGM, members resolved to strengthen the group’s operational structures to improve efficiency and address areas previously identified as weak. To this end, they agreed to form a seven-member committee tasked with addressing key concerns and fine-tuning the group’s constitution.
To enhance institutional memory and effective administration, the meeting emphasised the importance of a clear constitution. Mr Douglas Mumbia, popularly known as “OCS Mumbia,” was appointed to lead the committee spearheading the constitutional review.
The forum also established a projects committee mandated to identify and propose viable projects expected to benefit members, especially as the group prepares for an ambitious 2026 agenda.

Addressing members, patron Mr Ismael Mumia urged them to fully embrace and own the forum, noting that MYF has the potential to positively transform their lives.
“This is our group. Let us own it and support it wholeheartedly,” he said.
MYF was further praised for its effective resource mobilisation, particularly during times of bereavement. Members noted that the group has consistently raised hundreds of thousands of shillings within days to support bereaved families, a testament to its strong solidarity. Plans are now underway to establish a stable financial base to ensure long-term sustainability.
The AGM also resolved to tighten membership regulations, especially concerning non-contributing members. It was agreed that any member who fails to contribute for three consecutive times will be deregistered, a move aimed at encouraging commitment and accountability.

Kisumu County Woman Representative and sister to the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Mama Ruth Odinga, who was in the region for a courtesy call on the King of Wanga, held a brief session with MYF members. She applauded the youth for their progressive approach and constructive engagement.
“You are doing a commendable job, and I am impressed to meet you today. While some youth spend time hurling insults at leaders, I am proud to see the youth of Matungu focused, productive, and progressive,” she said.
Mama Odinga challenged the group to put its house in order and promised to visit them in the near future, emphasising the principle of inclusive development.
“There is nothing for us without us,” she noted, while acknowledging the sacrifices made by the group’s patron.
The meeting also reflected on the recent loss of one of MYF’s most devoted members, Mr Franklyn Otsieno, popularly known as “Drogba,” who died in a road accident and was laid to rest two days ago. Members observed a moment of reflection in his honour.
As the year begins, members expressed renewed optimism, noting that strong foundations have already been laid for a more impactful and united Matungu Youth Forum.
