For families that have lived for years without electricity, the arrival of power is more than a development project. It means brighter homes, more opportunities for children to study, safer neighbourhoods and a chance for small businesses to grow.

That hope took a major step forward on Saturday when Matungu MP Peter Oscar Nabulindo hosted Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi in Khalaba Ward for the commissioning of a major rural electrification project.

The project, undertaken through a partnership involving the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), Kenya Power (KPLC) and Nabulindo’s office, is expected to extend electricity to Khalaba KMTC and surrounding communities.

For residents, the development promises to bring essential services closer to the people while opening new opportunities for economic growth.

Nabulindo described the initiative as part of his broader commitment to ensuring that every household in Matungu Constituency eventually enjoys reliable electricity.

He said his development agenda was not simply about connecting homes to the national grid, but transforming lives and creating an environment where families, businesses and institutions could thrive.

“Our vision goes beyond lighting homes. We want to stimulate economic activities, enhance security, strengthen our institutions, empower businesses, create employment opportunities and improve the overall quality of life of our people,” he said.

The MP reaffirmed that he would continue working with the national government and relevant agencies to ensure that no household, institution or community is left behind.

The inclusion of Khalaba KMTC among the expected beneficiaries is particularly important, given the role electricity plays in supporting learning, institutional operations and the training of young people.

For small-scale traders and entrepreneurs, reliable power could also mean longer business hours, improved services and opportunities to venture into activities that require electricity.

Wandayi’s visit and the commissioning of the project underline the importance of partnerships between elected leaders, government agencies and electricity providers in taking development to the grassroots.

The initiative also complements President William Ruto’s administration’s commitment to expanding electricity access and using energy infrastructure to improve livelihoods across the country.

As Matungu continues its push towards universal electricity connectivity, the latest project in Khalaba offers residents a reason to look forward to a brighter future.

For Nabulindo, the task ahead is clear: ensuring that the benefits of electricity reach ordinary families, schools, health facilities and businesses across the constituency.

In Matungu, the ambition is simple but powerful — bringing light to every home and opening up new possibilities for every family.
