A learner’s plea for help has brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by children from vulnerable families at Mumias Central Comprehensive School, prompting the school’s administration to strengthen efforts to ensure no child is left behind because of poverty.

The learner’s account of hardships at home has highlighted the difficult circumstances some pupils endure while trying to pursue their education, underscoring the need for greater support from school management, community leaders and well-wishers.
In response, Head Teacher Francis Obwamu has announced a strategic plan to support needy learners, reaffirming the school’s commitment to giving every child a fair chance to learn and succeed, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.
Speaking during the school’s Prayer Day for Grade 6 and Grade 9 learners, Obwamu emphasized the importance of standing with vulnerable children, noting that access to education should not be determined by a family’s ability to meet basic needs.
Behind the daily school routine, some learners face difficulties that extend beyond the classroom, including challenges at home that may affect their concentration, attendance and overall academic progress. The concerns have reinforced the importance of identifying children in need and mobilizing resources to support them.
Obwamu revealed that a donor based in California is already supporting the school’s feeding programme, helping ensure learners receive meals while at school. The initiative provides an important source of support for children whose families may struggle to meet their basic needs.
The head teacher expressed gratitude to the area Member of County Assembly (MCA) for supporting the construction of boreholes and Mumias West Member of Parliament John Naicca for backing the construction of ablution blocks.
He also appealed to other leaders and well-wishers to invest in the construction of additional classrooms, citing rising enrolment that has put pressure on the school’s existing facilities.

According to Obwamu, expanding the school’s infrastructure would ease congestion and create a more conducive learning environment, allowing learners to study in better conditions.
He further commended Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa for supporting borehole projects, noting that water scarcity had previously posed a challenge to the school.
As the school seeks to strengthen its support systems, the learner’s appeal serves as a reminder that educational needs go beyond classrooms and examination results. For children facing hardship at home, access to meals, adequate sanitation, clean water and a supportive school environment can make a meaningful difference in their educational journey.
Obwamu called on leaders, donors and other stakeholders to work together in addressing the challenges facing the institution, emphasizing the need for sustained investment in education and learner welfare.
