Former Mayoni Ward MCA Calls for Inquiry into Jirongo’s Death

Former Mayoni Ward MCA, Hon. Libinus Oduor, has demanded the establishment of a commission of inquiry following the death of former Lugari MP and Luhya leader, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.

Jirongo died in a road accident at Karai area in Naivasha after his Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with a Climax bus headed to western Kenya. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It is devastating to continue losing leaders in this republic under suspicious circumstances,” Hon. Oduor said.

He described the late Jirongo—who once served as KANU youth wing leader and chaired the famous YK ’92 movement—as a genuine leader who rarely discriminated against anyone.

Oduor questioned the circumstances surrounding the accident, noting that no passenger from the bus has come forward to confirm being on board that night. “The Climax bus was reportedly headed to Busia. We expected many Luhya or people from western Kenya to have been in that bus,” he added.

According to the driver’s statement, Jirongo had just left a petrol station near Karai and joined the busy highway without observing safety measures. The driver claimed that instead of endangering the 65 passengers on board, he allowed Jirongo’s car to hit the bus. “Who does that?” Oduor asked.

He further expressed doubts about the timeline of events, pointing out that Jirongo was last seen with friends in Karen at around 11:45 p.m. and was reportedly headed to his home in Gigiri. “It baffles us to learn that he was involved in an accident at Karai while supposedly en route to Nairobi. It doesn’t make sense,” Oduor said.

The former MCA called for a thorough review of road surveillance footage to uncover the truth behind Jirongo’s death. “We want the many cameras on our roads to be studied so that we unearth everything surrounding the death of our dear brother Cyrus Jirongo,” he emphasized.

Speaking at Fafa Medical Training College during its second graduation ceremony, Oduor urged Luhya leaders to pressure the government into resolving the mystery. He reminded elected officials to prioritize the interests of the people. “You were put in those offices to serve the community. Let us start with Jirongo,” he said.

Jirongo was the party leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) of Kenya.
