Thaddeus Okoyana Oparanya, popularly known as Teddy, has been recognised as the outstanding school leader in Matungu Sub-County, in a major endorsement of his leadership and contribution to education.

Okoyana, the headteacher of Kholera Comprehensive School, emerged the winner in the School Leadership Excellence category during a colourful Teachers Service Commission (TSC) awards ceremony held at St Peter’s Mumias National School on Tuesday.

The ceremony brought together teachers, education officials and other stakeholders from Mumias West and Matungu, as the education fraternity honoured outstanding educators ahead of the global World Teachers’ Day celebrations.

For Okoyana, the award marks a significant milestone in a leadership journey that has seen him dedicate himself to transforming Kholera Comprehensive into a vibrant learning institution.

Known to many simply as Teddy, Okoyana has built a reputation for hands-on leadership, discipline and close engagement with teachers, learners, parents and the wider community.

Under his stewardship, Kholera Comprehensive has continued to navigate the demands of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system while managing a large and diverse learner population.

The school currently has more than 1,000 learners and 38 teachers, placing considerable demands on its administration. Yet, Okoyana has continued to push for improved discipline, effective teaching and learning, and better management of the institution.

His leadership has also focused on strengthening academic performance, supporting co-curricular activities and improving the learning environment.

Rather than viewing the transition to Junior Secondary School as a challenge, Okoyana has worked with his teachers to integrate the new system into the school’s operations while maintaining focus on the needs of learners across the different levels.

His efforts to mobilise support for infrastructure development have also earned him recognition within the community, particularly as the school seeks to cope with increasing enrolment and classroom pressure.

It is these efforts, among others, that have increasingly placed Okoyana at the centre of conversations about effective school leadership in Matungu.

Speaking after receiving the award, Okoyana dedicated the recognition to his teachers, learners, parents and everyone who has contributed to Kholera’s progress.

The TSC ceremony was also a celebration of the wider teaching profession, with several educators from Mumias West and Matungu receiving recognition in different categories.

The celebrations will continue on October 1 at St Ignatius Mukumu, where more teachers are expected to be honoured during the regional fete marking World Teachers’ Day.

For Kholera, however, Monday’s award was a moment of pride.

And for the man his colleagues affectionately call Teddy, the recognition represents more than a trophy. It is an affirmation of a leadership philosophy centred on service, teamwork and the belief that schools can change the lives of their communities.
