Butere Girls Alumni Mentorship Week Enriches Students with Career Guidance and Leadership Skills

Students at Butere Girls High School are currently engaged in a dynamic Alumni Mentorship Week that is offering them valuable exposure to career pathways, leadership development, and practical life skills beyond the classroom setting.

The programme, which commenced on Thursday and is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, also incorporates a series of co-curricular activities aimed at nurturing talent, teamwork, and holistic student development.

Now in its eighth year, the initiative has grown into a key fixture in the school calendar, bringing together alumni and professionals from diverse fields to interact with students and guide them on academic and career progression.

Speaking during the mentorship sessions, Alumni Chairperson Rose Barasa underscored the importance of the programme in shaping the future of learners.

She noted that the initiative was established to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the professional world by exposing students to real-life experiences and multiple career options.

Barasa said the mentorship week brings together experts from various sectors including medicine, law, engineering, education, media, and public service, all of whom engage learners in interactive sessions aimed at broadening their understanding of the world of work.

She further highlighted that the alumni network plays an active role in supporting bright and needy students, ensuring that financial challenges do not hinder academic progress.

The school principal, Linda Zalo, said the institution has strengthened the mentorship programme through strategic partnerships with various professional bodies.

She explained that these collaborations have enabled students to receive direct mentorship from industry practitioners who guide them through different academic disciplines and career pathways.

According to the principal, the engagement with professional bodies has significantly enhanced the learning experience, giving students a clearer understanding of subject combinations, career opportunities, and the skills required in today’s competitive job market.

She emphasized that the school remains committed to holistic education that integrates academic excellence with life skills development.

The school headgirl noted that the mentorship programme has had a positive impact on students, particularly in building confidence and improving interpersonal skills.

The programme is patroned by Her Excellence first lady Rachael Ruto, who, although not physically present at the event, is credited with initiating the mentorship programme during her earlier association with the institution as an alumna. Her continued support has been acknowledged as instrumental in sustaining and expanding the initiative over the years.

Education stakeholders and participants have lauded the programme as a transformative platform that continues to empower young women with knowledge, exposure, and mentorship.

They note that such initiatives play a critical role in nurturing confident, well-informed, and socially responsible graduates.
