“Cleanliness is next to godliness” came to life in Mumias Town and its surrounding areas over the weekend, as the St. Mary’s Mumias Girls Senior School community undertook a remarkable clean-up exercise.
In what many described as a rare and commendable initiative, the students and staff dedicated their time to cleaning Mumias Town, nearby estates, Mumias Police Station, ACK Diocese premises, Children homes, Mumias Cultural Centre,Government administrative offices and key pathways within the town and its environs.
The exercise, themed “Protecting the Girl Child,” was spearheaded by the School’s Senior Principal, Mrs. Monicah Buchichi Nyange. As part of the school’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), she led the students beyond the school compound to actively contribute to improving the town’s sanitation and environment.

St. Mary’s Mumias Girls is a premier girls’ school in the western region of Kenya, widely recognized for its consistent academic excellence and strong performance in co-curricular activities. Its impressive track record has made it a preferred choice for many parents, leading to increased student enrollment over the years.
Speaking during the exercise, The school management noted that the school enjoys strong support from the local community and felt it was important to reciprocate.
As a school, we felt that the best way to give back to the community that has been very supportive to us was by contributing to a cleaner environment as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility program,” they said.
“Mumias Town and it’s environ defines who we are, and its cleanliness remains a top priority for us. We are committed to doing even more, as time allows, to ensure that everything around it remains clean, beautiful, and welcoming.” they added.
Local businessman Mr. Bonface Ngashira lauded the initiative, praising the Principal for her forward-thinking approach.
The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Mumias Police Station, Mr. Kasisi, also expressed appreciation for the school’s efforts. He highlighted the strong relationship between the institution and the police.
“St. Mary’s is one of the institutions we enjoy working with. The Principal maintains open communication with us, and we have had a very positive relationship with the school,” he said.
Market Chairperson Ali Matseshe equally commended the school administration, noting the importance of the initiative, especially during the rainy season.

The clean-up exercise has further strengthened the bond between the school and the community, with residents expressing their appreciation and pledging continued support.

Many noted that St. Mary’s Mumias Girls stands out as an institution deeply committed not only to academic excellence but also to the well-being of the wider community.
