The Abashitsetse Clan of the Wanga Kingdom has officially launched an education empowerment kitty, dubbed the Abashitsetse Nation Welfare Kitty, aimed at supporting needy students within the clan.

The clan, which has a strong presence in Matungu, Mumias West, and Mumias East sub-counties, is regarded as one of the most influential in Kakamega County and the wider Western region. Historically, the clan traces its prominence to Nabongo Mumia, a paramount chief whose influence extended across the region up to Naivasha.

Speaking during the launch held at Mumias Cultural Centre, the Abashitsetse National Chairman, Mr. Joseph Ndombera Tumbo (HSC), emphasized the importance of education in community transformation.

“We are a premier clan with a strong presence in Western Kenya, and we want our people to be empowered. Education remains the most effective tool for enlightenment, and that is why we have chosen to support the educational needs of our kinsmen,” he said.

Mr. Tumbo noted that the program has begun by supporting two students from every ward in Matungu, Mumias West, and Mumias East—one boy and one girl—with plans to expand the initiative in the future.

“This is just the beginning. We hope to enlist more learners as the program grows,” he added.
He further explained that the funds distributed were raised through contributions from dedicated members of the clan committed to uplifting their community.

The Secretary General of the Abashitsetse, Mr. Addu Makau, called upon well-wishers and members of the clan to continue supporting the initiative.

“We want this program to grow so that more needy cases can benefit. Today, we have issued cheques of KSh 5,000 each to 24 students, but our goal is to reach even more,” he stated.
He reiterated that the clan is also investing in other sectors, including development projects, benevolent programs, and Cultural preservation efforts to ensure their heritage remains intact.

Prof. Festo Chitere, the Patron of the Abashitsetse Clan, commended the leadership for initiating the bursary program and challenged beneficiaries to remain disciplined and focused on their studies.

“The kind of support you are receiving is rare. You must work hard and uphold discipline to excel academically. You are ambassadors of this clan, and we expect you to carry its mantle with pride,” said Prof. Chitere.

He added that academic success would not only open opportunities but also build confidence, networks, and a strong personal reputation.

Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the support. Joseph Onyango, a student at Musanda Senior School in Mumias West, promised to make the clan proud.

“I am motivated to work harder and improve myself. I will not let the clan down,” he said.
Nancy Awino from St. Vincent Butende also appreciated the support, pledging to excel in her studies.

Several leaders and members of the clan contributed generously towards the kitty. Among them were Hon. Rashid Echesa (KSh 100,000), Peter Nabulindo (KSh 70,000), Dr. George Wamukoya (KSh 50,000), Hadija Nganyi (KSh 30,000), Justine Mutobera (KSh 40,000), Faluma Wesaya (KSh 30,000), Brian Omondi (KSh 5,000), and Fr.
