With exactly one year to the 2027 General Election, the political landscape in Vihiga County is gradually crystallizing, as aspirants position themselves for the highly anticipated Vihiga gubernatorial contest.

Among the latest entrants is former Vihiga Senator, George Munyasia Khaniri, who has officially re-emerged in the county’s succession matrix. Khaniri, who previously vied for the gubernatorial seat under the United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket within the Azimio la Umoja coalition in 2022, is once again laying the groundwork for another bid.

While defending his legacy, Khaniri pointed to his tenure as both Member of Parliament and Senator, emphasizing that his development record predates the introduction of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
He noted that before the Mwai Kibaki administration introduced CDF, development largely depended on the personal initiative of MPs.
“I organized numerous harambees to establish schools and health centres across Hamisi and beyond. Many of the institutions you see today are a product of those efforts,” Khaniri stated.
He further explained that the introduction of CDF during Kibaki’s presidency transformed grassroots development by allocating funds directly to constituencies—though initially at much lower levels than current allocations.

Khaniri also highlighted his performance in the Senate, underscoring his constitutional role in oversight, legislation, and representation.
He cited his oversight of Vihiga’s first governor, Moses Akaranga, and current governor Wilberforce Ottiichillo during his first term, asserting that he consistently pushed for prudent resource management.
Additionally, Khaniri described himself as one of the Senate’s top debaters and revealed that he quietly facilitated employment opportunities for many youths from Hamisi Sub-county in national government institutions.

Following his narrow loss to Governor Ottiichillo in 2022, Khaniri has reactivated his political networks across Hamisi, Vihiga, Sabatia, Luanda, and Emuhaya sub-counties.
He is currently conducting grassroots consultations and public engagements ahead of a formal declaration of his gubernatorial bid.

Political analysts aver that his entry significantly reshapes the race and could complicate the ambitions of early entrants such as Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and other contenders.

Hon. Khaniri’s deep understanding of Vihiga politics—having entered Parliament in his early 20s—gives him a strategic edge.
His support base in the populous Tiriki community within Hamisi Sub-county is seen as a key advantage, particularly in a race where Maragoli candidates (dominant in Vihiga and Sabatia) may split votes and Banyore aspirants (from Luanda and Emuhaya) also face internal competition.
This fragmentation could position Khaniri as a consensus candidate.

Khaniri’s influence is further bolstered by:
Strong ties with religious institutions across the county
Considerable financial resources
Extensive grassroots networks
Following the death of the UDP party leader, Cyrus Jirongo, Khaniri assumed leadership of the party, giving him a strategic advantage in party primaries and shielding him from internal nomination disputes.

The race to succeed Governor Ottiichillo—who is serving his final term—has attracted a wide array of contenders, including:
Godfrey Osotsi
Omboko Milemba
Beatrice Adagala
George Aladwa
Kahi Indimuli and
Janet Ominde.

Amid rising political activity, residents have expressed frustration with current leadership, citing persistent governance and service delivery challenges.

Some residents have openly welcomed Khaniri’s return, expressing optimism that his leadership could offer an alternative direction for the county.

“We want to fix the leadership mess in Vihiga. Khaniri is welcome in Vihiga anytime—we miss his leadership,” said one resident.

As Vihiga heads toward the 2027 elections, the entry of George Khaniri injects new energy into an already competitive race. With shifting alliances, demographic calculations, and performance records under scrutiny, the contest is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched county races in Western Kenya.
