New Principal on a Mission to Revive Lubinu Boys High School

Barely two weeks into his tenure at St. Paul’s Lubinu Boys High School, Senior Principal Mr. Harun Kweyu has already made his presence felt.

A seasoned educator with a track record of academic excellence, Mr. Kweyu joins the institution from Kaimosi Boys High School in Vihiga County, succeeding Mr. Conrad Walumbe, who recently retired.

Under Mr. Walumbe’s leadership, Lubinu Boys reportedly experienced a decline in performance, and now all eyes are on Mr. Kweyu to restore the school’s former glory as an academic powerhouse in the region.

Speaking to MorningMail from his office, Mr. Kweyu expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he received from all stakeholders, including the school sponsor, the Board of Management (BOM), and the teaching staff.

Mr Harun Kwetu

“I love the teamwork, the support, and the reception I’ve received from the stakeholders of this great school. Their commitment is truly unmatched, and I promise not to let them down,” he said.

Mr. Kweyu was particularly complimentary of BOM Chair Wakili Ken Echesa, whom he described as deeply passionate about education.

“I’ve never seen someone so dedicated to educational matters as our BOM Chair. His energy and commitment are inspiring,” he added.

Determined to restore Lubinu Boys to its former academic standing, Mr. Kweyu has outlined a clear set of goals: streamlining academics, clearing school debts, upholding exam integrity, and improving student welfare.

Academic Revival Strategy

With academics as the top priority, Mr. Kweyu—working closely with Wakili Echesa—has introduced several measures aimed at boosting performance. These include:

  • Hosting extensive talks by subject experts
  • Reteaching selected topics
  • Intensive revision using past KNEC papers
  • Strengthening group discussions
  • Structured teacher-student engagement
  • Fostering team spirit among teachers

The BOM Chair has also played a pivotal role in boosting morale. He recently organised a retreat for the school’s 45 teachers in Busia and hosted breakfast sessions with both candidates and pre-candidates. These efforts, Mr. Kweyu noted, have significantly uplifted the spirits of both staff and students.

Stakeholder Support and Aspirations

ACK Mumias Diocese Bishop, Rev. Joseph Wandera, has expressed high expectations for the school and remains actively engaged in its progress. The school posted a mean score of 5.4 in 2024, and the target for the 2025 class has been ambitiously set at 7.5.

Parents have also voiced their support. Mr. Wilson Mutimba, a parent and former beneficiary of Mr. Kweyu’s leadership, praised the principal’s appointment.

“Two of my sons went through his hands at his previous school. I believe he’s the right person to restore the lost glory of Lubinu Boys,” he said.

With the recent elevation of St. Peter’s Mumias to C1 status, Lubinu Boys now stands as the premier C2 school in lower Kakamega. Mr. Kweyu emphasised the importance of leveraging this position to reassert the school’s academic dominance.

“We have the necessary infrastructure, a committed teaching staff, and disciplined students eager to learn. With continued support from parents, the community, and all stakeholders, nothing will stop us from achieving impressive academic results,” he affirmed.
