A wave of panic has swept through the ranks of hopefuls eyeing the Malava Parliamentary seat, left vacant by the untimely death of Hon. Moses Malulu Injendi just months ago.

The sudden announcement of Leonard Shimaka’s candidacy, a prominent lawyer and successful businessman, has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, leaving many aspirants reeling.

Shimaka, known for his deep financial resources and strong connections to influential figures, poses a formidable challenge to those who had already declared their intentions.

His wealth and strategic alliances have unsettled many of the other candidates. In Malava, his financial clout remains unmatched, giving him a distinct edge in the race.

Born and raised in the village of Lukume, nestled within the vibrant South Kabras Ward, Shimaka brings not just experience but also a grounded understanding of the local community.

His reputation as a flamboyant businessman and astute legal mind precedes him, and he is affectionately known as “Wakili” across the constituency.

With over 30 candidates vying for the seat across multiple political parties, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) appears to have the highest number of aspirants seeking its coveted ticket.

Amid this crowded field, Wakili Shimaka has assembled a focused team of technocrats who are actively selling his vision and agenda to the electorate.

Political observers consider Shimaka a top contender to succeed the late Malulu Injendi, citing his deep understanding of the constituency’s complex social fabric.

His wealth has enabled him to support numerous charitable causes, reinforcing his reputation as a generous benefactor. Many believe it is time for the community to return the favour at the ballot box.

Mzee Wycliffe Wanakacha, a respected elder from Chegulo Ward, expressed his support:

“Shimaka embodies the leadership qualities we seek. He has consistently demonstrated what it means to be a true representative of the people. He avoids divisive politics and focuses on the issues that matter most to the electorate. That is what has endeared him to many.”

Adding further weight to his campaign is Shimaka’s close relationship with the President. His ties to the head of state suggest the ruling party may have a vested interest in keeping the seat under friendly leadership.

While the UDA secretariat has yet to issue a formal statement, there is little doubt that Shimaka is viewed as the frontrunner.

In his campaign platform, Shimaka promises to reset Malava’s development trajectory. He has pledged to address urgent infrastructural problems, including deteriorating roads, unreliable electricity supply, and limited bursary allocations.

He also aims to boost job opportunities for youth and women and to enhance the quality of education in the area.

As the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) prepares to announce the by-election date, residents of Malava are watching closely, ready to elect a new Member of Parliament who will shape the future of their community.
