Every successful person has a story, and for many, that journey began in a school that provided the foundation for their future. But as former students build careers in medicine, law, education, business, journalism and other professions, an important question arises: How many are giving back to the schools that helped shape their lives?
Across Kenya, schools continue to nurture young people who need mentorship, financial assistance, learning materials and exposure to career opportunities. Former students are uniquely placed to help meet these needs, yet the potential of alumni and alumnae networks remains untapped in many institutions.
Giving back does not necessarily require millions of shillings. One former student can support a needy learner’s education, another can donate books or laboratory equipment, while others can volunteer their professional skills, offer career guidance or connect schools with scholarship opportunities.
For girls’ schools, old girls can play an especially important role by mentoring learners, encouraging leadership and helping young women navigate career choices and the challenges of life beyond school. Their experiences can show current students that success is possible, regardless of where their journey begins.
However, meaningful support requires organisation. Alumni and alumnae associations should establish reliable communication channels, identify schools’ priorities, mobilise resources and ensure transparency in managing contributions. School administrations should also actively engage former students and provide clear opportunities for collaboration.
School reunions and anniversary celebrations are valuable, but their impact should extend beyond photographs and nostalgic conversations. They should inspire practical initiatives such as scholarship funds, mentorship programmes, library improvements and annual school development projects.
Former students living in Kenya and abroad can contribute through organised networks without necessarily visiting their schools frequently. What matters is a shared commitment to supporting the next generation.
This is a call to former students across the country, particularly old girls, to reconnect with their former institutions. Those with financial resources can fund projects, while those with experience, time and professional networks can offer equally valuable support.
If your former school lacks an active alumni association, work with fellow graduates and school management to establish one. Start with achievable goals, maintain accountability and build a culture of consistent giving.
A school’s success should not be measured only by the people it produces, but also by their willingness to help those who follow in their footsteps.
Former students, your schools gave you a foundation. Now you have an opportunity to strengthen it for the next generation. Do not just remember your school. Return, reconnect and give back.
