For more than two decades, Kennedy Kunani has quietly devoted his career to teaching, mentoring and shaping generations of learners in Matungu.

On Tuesday, that long service finally received national recognition when the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) honoured the Namulungu Senior School teacher with a Lifetime Achievement Award at St. Peter’s Mumias National School.

The award placed Kunani among the most distinguished teachers honoured during a ceremony bringing together outstanding educators from Matungu and Mumias West sub-counties ahead of World Teachers’ Day.

His recognition was a celebration not only of years spent in the classroom, but also of the influence he has had on learners, fellow teachers and the wider community.

TSC Director for Matungu Samson Matoke praised teachers for their contribution to society, describing them as critical players in shaping the lives and futures of learners.

Kunani’s colleagues and former learners regard him as a teacher whose influence extends beyond academic results. Through years of service, he has mentored learners and supported fellow educators while remaining committed to the community he serves.

His award came on a day when other teachers from the region were also recognised for excellence in school leadership and teaching.

The honours underscored the changing face of teacher recognition, with emphasis extending beyond examination results to areas such as mentorship, leadership, inclusion, child protection and community impact.

As Kenya prepares to mark World Teachers’ Day on October 5, Kunani’s recognition offers a reminder of the lasting influence of teachers whose contribution is often measured not in trophies, but in the lives of the people they have shaped.
