As excitement builds ahead of the 2026 Western Region Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Games in Bungoma County, St. Martha’s Mwitoti Senior School from Mumias East has expressed confidence in its ability to shine on the regional stage.

The school will field teams in girls’ volleyball and netball after an impressive outing at the Kakamega County Secondary Schools Championships held in Mumias from June 18 to 20.

St. Martha’s Mwitoti has established itself as one of the region’s top volleyball schools. Having represented the county at the national championships last year, the school is determined to build on that success and secure another ticket to the nationals.

School Principal Samuel Ogolla says the teams are well prepared and ready to compete against the region’s best.

“We have participated in several build-up tournaments, and the girls have performed exceptionally well. We have prepared thoroughly, and we are not intimidated by any team at the regional championships. Our target is to qualify for the national games,” said Mr. Ogolla.

He acknowledged that schools such as Lugulu Girls will provide stiff competition but maintained that his players have what it takes to lift the regional title.

Mr. Ogolla also commended the Ministry of Education for its continued support of school sports, while appealing for timely release of funds to enable schools to prepare adequately before major competitions.

“The Ministry has done well in supporting school games, but we request that facilitation be released earlier so that schools can organize better preparations ahead of the championships,” he said.

The principal further urged sports fans from Mumias East and across Kakamega County to travel to Bungoma and rally behind the school’s volleyball and netball teams.

He also called on coaches across the country to uphold fairness by fielding only eligible players, saying the integrity of school competitions must be protected.

“These games are meant for students. Let us all field eligible players and allow the competitions to be decided fairly on the court and on the field,” he added.

St. Martha’s Mwitoti heads to Bungoma in high spirits after a dominant performance at the county championships. The volleyball team defeated Butere Girls 3-0 in the semifinals before producing another commanding 3-0 victory over St. Joseph’s in the final to lift the county title.

The school’s netball team also impressed, defeating Lukhokho 40-28 to book its place at the regional championships.

With strong preparations, impressive recent form, and high expectations from the Mumias East community, St. Martha’s Mwitoti will be aiming to return home from Bungoma with regional honours and secure qualification for the national championships.
