The Western Region intercollegiate ball games, which kicked off on Wednesday at Lugari Diploma Teachers Training College, concluded today in an exciting finale, with top-performing teams receiving trophies for their outstanding performances across several sporting disciplines.

Nine teachers’ training colleges from the Western region participated in the 2026 championship. The institutions included Kibabii Diploma Teachers Training College, Kaimosi Teachers Training College, Eregi Teachers Training College, Bunyore Teachers Training College, Bondo Teachers Training College, Seme Teachers Training College, Ugenya Teachers Training College, Lugari Teachers Training College and Nabongo Teachers Training College.

All participating colleges fielded teams in a range of disciplines, including football, volleyball and handball, in both men’s and women’s categories.

The colourful championship was hosted by Lugari Teachers Training College, which received praise for the successful organisation of the tournament. The college principal, Anne Esese, was commended for the effective measures put in place to ensure the competition ran smoothly.

Students from Lugari were also lauded for their discipline, warm hospitality and positive engagement with visiting teams throughout the tournament.

Sports activities in colleges play a critical role in promoting students’ physical health and fitness, while also fostering teamwork, leadership skills, networking opportunities and a strong sense of institutional spirit.

Fans were treated to thrilling encounters, particularly in football, where teams displayed highly competitive performances.

At the end of the championship, Eregi Teachers Training College emerged as the overall champions with 104 points. Kaimosi Teachers Training College finished second with 88 points, while Bondo Teachers Training College secured third place with 67 points.

The best-performing teams will now represent the Western Region at the upcoming national championships scheduled to be held at Asumbi Teachers Training College.

Students from the participating institutions expressed excitement about the opportunity to interact and form new friendships with peers from across the region.

The teams advancing to the national stage now carry the hopes and aspirations of the Western Region as they prepare to compete at a higher level.
