St. Peter’s Mumias Boys Comprehensive School in Mumias West, Kakamega County, has recorded outstanding success in the recently released Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) results, with more than 300 students scoring at or above the “meeting expectations” level.
Dalmas William Otieno emerged as the school’s top candidate, posting an impressive 71 out of a possible 72 points—placing him among the best performers nationally.
The institution, widely regarded as one of the premier schools in the region, has a rich history of excellence in both academics and co-curricular activities.
Speaking to this writer, the school’s head, Sr. Praxides Odero, expressed pride in the achievement:
“We registered 327 students for KJSEA, and we are proud of the impressive performance posted by our boys. They knew their position in life, they knew what they wanted, and my teachers did an excellent job preparing them. We always believed they would deliver genuine and outstanding results.”
Sr. Odero attributed the success to hard work, discipline, early syllabus coverage, and exposure to numerous internal and external examinations.
Deputy Headteacher Mr David Kubende emphasised the importance of a supportive learning environment:
“You cannot realise productivity in a hostile environment. At our school, the interests of students come first. We empower our boys to understand their place in life, and this has greatly helped us. Our learners are confident enough to speak up when they don’t understand something, and that feedback has enabled us to improve teaching in areas they felt needed attention.”
He added that at one point, the administration reshuffled teachers to serve learners’ needs better, a move that contributed to the strong academic outcomes.
The school leadership also thanked parents for their unwavering support and acknowledged the Catholic Church, the school’s sponsor, for providing spiritual nourishment that has had a profoundly positive impact on the students.
Looking ahead, Sr. Odero noted that 2025 has highlighted areas for further improvement:
“Our boys performed exceptionally well in STEM pathways, and we are determined to strengthen our position as a hub for sciences and mathematics.”
With this performance, St. Peter’s Mumias Boys Comprehensive School has reaffirmed its reputation as a centre of academic excellence in Kakamega County and beyond.
