Wakili Geoffrey Okara’s efforts to better education standards in Matungu Sub County are slowly bearing fruits based on the impressive performances of the schools that he chairs their Boards of Management.

St Gabriel Mirere and St. Teresa’s Itete all have Wakili Okara as the chairman of the board and the schools registered impressive performances in the just released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations’ results.

St Gabriel Mirere in Namamali Ward has broken the history by sending over 30 candidates to the university something that has never happened since the inception of the school. The school also registered a positive deviation in its mean score.

St Teresa’s Itete, one of the leading county schools in Matungu whose Principal is the hardworking Mr George Wekesa sent over 64 students to the university and also registered a mean of 5.627.

According to Wakili, education is the only equaliser that is known and he will continue championing quality education as he understands what quality education can do in the life of someone.

“I personally went to a local day school, and went to bed without meals countless times but I changed my life because of the quality education that I received during my formative years,” Wakili Okara said.

He added, “You cannot realise production in a hostile environment and that is why in my capacity as the chairman of the Board, I had to take personal measures to challenge my school to improve in performance and I am happy that a number of families won’t be the same in the near future.”

Last year, Okara gifted all the students from St Teresa’s Itete with laptops as a way of appreciating them after scoring above the minimum university entry grade.

He also took teachers for team building in Eldoret, motivated the teachers by awarding them with prizes from his pocket and even students have feasted on sumptuous meals from him.

All these have been done because of the interest Wakili has in quality education.

Speaking to this writer, a teacher from the schools that have been supported by Wakili Okara said that they are proud of him as the chairman of the Board as his leadership has been unmatched.

“We have been able to scale these heights and success because of the support and incentives that we have always received from Wakili,” said a teacher at St Gabriel Mirere.

The teacher added, “We have had numerous chairs of the Board but we have never seen someone so passionate about matters of education like Wakili Okara. A number of needy students from the locality are also supported by Wakili and we thank him for that.”

Besides being the chairman of the Board of St. Teresa Itete and St. Gabriel Mirere, Wakili Okara is also a board member of Koyonzo Girls Secondary School, Mirere Primary and Emarinda Primary School all in Matungu Constituency.
