Wakili Robert Ojou came to the rescue of over 22 Koyonzo residents who were arrested for propagating protests against police officers at Koyonzo Market by representing them in court and securing their release on bail.

While appearing before the Resident Magistrate Marcella Amondi Anyango, the defence team which was represented by the renowned counsel Robert Ojou, put up a spirited fight to have the suspects released on cash bail pending investigations.

Wakili Ojou argued the suspects come from humble backgrounds, they are not at flight risk and can be available in court anytime. They were only victims of circumstance and demanded a cash bail of at least Ksh3,000.

“Most of the suspects were arrested while on their way from church, some were arrested while in Kinyozi and others even didn’t know why they were arrested,” he argued.

He added, “I ask this honourable court to release them with a cash bail of Ksh3,000 as most of the them can’t raise anything above that.”

Having considered the above, the Principal Magistrate Marcella Amondi Anyango released the 22 suspects on cash bail of Ksh5,000 each. The case is set for mention on 17th April 2024.

Speaking after their release, Benson Webotsa, alias Chapati ni Chapati, thanked Wakili Robert Ojou for representing the suspects in court and wished him well in his future engagements.

Pastor Sammy Kweyu, a brother to one of the suspects also thanked Wakili for representing the great people of Matungu in court free of charge.

“We have sons of Matungu who are doing great out there but it is only Wakili Robert Ojou who came to the defence of the suspects and offered free legal services to several families that were appearing before Principal Magistrate Marcella Amondi Anyango. May the good Lord bless you and your family Wakili Robert Ojou,” said Pastor Kweyu.

Two night-guards were butchered by unknown assailants at Koyonzo Market prompting protests in the market that led to the arrest of the suspects.
